Sugar or Sand Contamination

Sand weed, surfweed, sugar skunk... the references to these somewhat makeshift varieties of contaminant appear to be more prolific now than ever before.
Reports suggest that at some stage in the supply chain either a fine sand substance is added or more commonly a fine sugar based product is integrated with the buds. The former method should be fairly obvious to spot with the naked eye or with the standard 'grit test'. The latter (sugar) is harder to spot as the substance is usually extremely fine like talcum powder. Fortunately the sugar substance is sweet to the taste so a standard grit test should alert the taste buds rather than the usual crunching sensation between the teeth.
Presently there is a lack of scientific analysis of these varieties of contaminants - the substances involved appear to be sugar or sand like but these identifications appear to be merely conjecture. In effect we have no idea what these contaminants actually are.
